Dr Charan Koghar General Practitioner The Neighbourhood Clinic in Melbourne

DR CHARAN KOGHAR

GENERAL PRACTITIONER

MBBS, FRACGP

Dr Charan Koghar graduated from the University of London in 2009 and trained in various teaching hospitals in the UK, gaining experience in obstetrics and gynaecology, gastroenterology, orthopaedics and intensive care to name a few areas of medicine.

Charan then decided to make the move to Melbourne in 2011, where he has lived in the inner north ever since. He initially worked in surgical and emergency medicine at Austin Health before settling on specialising in General Practice.

He trained to become a General Practitioner in rural Victoria, and obtained his Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) in 2016. Charan then went on to practice in Melbourne’s western suburbs where he has also supervised and trained GP registrars. His practice in the west saw him providing care for a broad spectrum of patients from a large variety of backgrounds. This enabled him to gain extensive experience in General Practice’s vast breadth of work.

Charan is passionate about providing quality and comprehensive care for his patients. He strongly believes that effective communication and being a keen listener is the foundation to being a good GP. He is always ready to help his patients achieve their health and well-being goals. Charan truly appreciates building solid long-lasting patient-doctor relationships and looks forward to being your local GP.

Dr Koghar enjoys the full gambit of General Practice but does have additional qualifications and interests. Of note, he has also undertaken further training in primary health for patients of gender diverse backgrounds, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness to ensure that patients from diverse backgrounds feel welcome and comfortable coming to the doctor.

Outside of work, Charan lives with his wonderful wife, greyhound and 2 cats. He enjoys travelling to exotic and distant locations and trying local cuisines (although being vegetarian can sometimes be limiting). He has also recently taken up scuba diving and is anxiously awaiting his next dive. Notably, Charan does enjoy going to live local gigs, so don't be surprised if you catch him at your local haunts!

His special interests/additional skills are as follows:

  • Skin cancer Medicine/Skin checks

  • Medicinal Cannabis (Charan is an Authorised Prescriber)

  • Travel Medicine

  • HIV PrEP and Hepatitis C treatment

  • Implanon insertion/removal

  • Refugee Health
